Burglars steal items and cash from Wells Church

Silver chalices and a safe containing around £200 in cash have been stolen from St Nicholas Church in Wells-next-the-Sea.

Reverend Brenda Stewart, rector of the church has described the shock she felt after discovering that one of her churches had been the scene of a burglary, which took place between 6pm on Saturday, October 14 and 10am the next day.

A parishioner who arrived on the Sunday morning to set up the church for the service found the back door open, and the door to the vestry smashed. A safe containing the cash had been stolen, along with two chalices that are normally used for Holy Communion. Police were then called.

The shocked rector said the money taken was from donations and the collection plate over a two-week period, used for the day-to-day running of the church. It was due to be counted and deposited into its bank account within the next couple of days.

Police enquiries are ongoing.
