Norwich church youth team wins league title in first season

A team from Sprowston Parish has won the Norfolk Christian Football League’s Under-16s league title in their very first season.

SYEP FC was set up under the Sprowston Youth Engagement Project which has been running for six years and holds weekly youth cafes as St Cuthbert’s Church on Tuesdays and at St. Margaret’s Church Hall on Thursdays.

Student Minister, Andy Bunter, said: “The boys wanted to start the team out of a desire to play competitive football together. They were entered into the under 16s cup last season and got to the final, being beaten by Brooke FC, and this year played in the league only.

“They have won 12 out of 14 games and have had a goal difference that is simply amazing. The pre-match talk from SYEP has always been about how God grows character and it is that character we want to see on the football pitch and present in the lives of these young people as they go forward.

“As the Under 16s champions, the team is now wanting to have a hand in coaching other teams of a younger age group through football in the NCFL League through SYEP,” said Andy.

The team will receive their trophy and medals at the youth cup finals day on Saturday May 12.

SYEP provides positive activities for children aged 13-17 and was set up by Clare Lincoln and Rev Canon Simon Stokes.
