YMCA Norfolk CEO moves to Diocese of Norwich

CEO of YMCA Norfolk, Tim Sweeting, has today been named as the new Diocesan Secretary for the Diocese of Norwich - a senior strategic leadership role within the Diocese.

The Rt Rev Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich, said: “I am delighted that Tim Sweeting has been appointed as the next Diocesan Secretary. This role encompasses being a strategic leader, a service-focused manager, a wise steward, an enabler of good governance and a passionate ambassador to help our parishes and chaplaincies to flourish.

“Tim is already an experienced and much respected charity leader in Norfolk with a passion for people to know Jesus. His own Christian discipleship, together with his commitment to mission, will mean that he will bring much to our life together in the Diocese of Norwich.”

Tim Sweeting said: “I am excited to be joining the Diocese of Norwich at such an important moment. Local churches make an incredible difference in their communities and I am looking forward to working with diocesan colleagues to support the wonderful, committed people who enable that to happen in so many rich and diverse ways.

“I feel privileged to have led an incredible team at YMCA Norfolk who have enabled transformation in the lives of countless young people and families over these last 12 years. I pray that the foundations we have built, including the new YMCA on Aylsham Road in Norwich, will support the charity, and those it serves, for many years to come.”

A graduate of the University of East Anglia, Tim has spent 22 years working for YMCA, the last 12 as Chief Executive of YMCA Norfolk. A Lay Canon of Norwich Cathedral since 2017 and Vice Chair of the Mitre Benefice Parochial Church Council, Tim also holds leadership positions with Norfolk Museums Development Foundation, The Wherry School, and Theatre Royal, Norwich.

YMCA Chair, Philip Macdonald said: "It has been a privilege to have Tim serve as CEO of YMCA Norfolk for the past 12 years. He has led with a clear sense of purpose and has been unwavering in his determination to see young people given the opportunity to be the best that they can be. He has served with a real Godliness and true humility touching the lives of so many people both at YMCA Norfolk and beyond. We are so grateful for all he has done, and we know he will be a real blessing in his new role."

Chair of the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance, Mark Jeffries, added: “The impact of Tim’s energy and determination in his 12 years as CEO of Norfolk YMCA has been hugely impressive. I am very much looking forward to working with him as he brings that energy and determination to the work of the diocese.”

The role of the Diocesan Secretary is to run the charity, reporting to the Bishop and DBF Chair, by combining three distinctive functions: Secretary (CEO) of the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance; Senior Executive Officer for the Bishop; Chief Administrative Officer of the Diocese. Tim will be taking up the position with the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance (NDBF) in August this year.
