Quiz to turn churchyards into Heavenly Gardens

The Norwich Historic Churches Trust has created a walking quiz to raise money for its project to plant up churchyards only using plants available before 1500.

The quiz, very suitable for family bubbles, is 3 km and takes roughly 1.5 hrs. It is free but there is an optional donation towards transforming medieval church yards in Norwich into community gardens. St Margaret’s is one which has now planted up using only plants available before 1500, the period when all of Norwich medieval churches were built.

The project is called Heavenly Gardens and is hosted by the Norwich Historic Churches Trust, which looks after 18 of the 32 surviving mediaeval churches - the biggest group of medieval churches in a city of northern Europe (www.heavenlygardens.org.uk).

The churchyards have been pesticide and fertiliser free for many years and are able to support a variety of unusual plants and insects, thereby improving the beauty and biodiversity of Norwich.

Volunteers look after many of these churchyards and it is proposed to expand this activity so that a range of improvements can be made to the churchyards, which make up nearly half of the green space in the city centre.

Residents will be encouraged to join in gardening activities, which should benefit their health and general well-being.

Training will be given by the Norfolk School of Gardening. Heavenly Gardens is currently being supported by the local Co-operative Community Fund.
