Sheringham shed funders day 75

Lighthouse Church thanks Sheringham Shed supporters

A “funders day” was held recently at the new Sheringham Shed project to thank those who have been supporting and funding the project, and to raise awareness of ongoing needs. Tony Rothe reports.

Sheringham Shed is a project of Lighthouse Charity Trust, which provides unconditional services to the local community in North Norfolk on behalf of the family of Lighthouse Community Church.

Sheringham shed outside 640ATPeter Farley, one of the project’s directors, said “We are very excited to report that we are on the cusp of starting operations. The purpose of Sheringham Shed is to meet the needs of those living in Sheringham and the surrounding areas, in ways which are totally inclusive and that enhance their sense of well-being. This will be achieved, by setting up and developing facilities and initiatives to enable folk to meet up, so that as individuals or with others, they can enjoy creative, physical, leisure, practical and recreational activities of their choice.”

The Lighthouse Charity Trust purchased and repaired the old St John Ambulance building in Wyndham Street, Sheringham, with a £200,00 grant from a charitable trust. A further £100,000 has been raised from charitable trusts and agencies, which has enabled the refurbishment of the premises.

A considerable amount of work has been carried out on the building to date, including replacing the roof, dry-lining, insulating and plastering walls, installation of fire doors, windows, skirting boards etc, new floors throughout, rewiring (including computer networking, telephone lines, broadband, alarm systems and CCTV), new lighting, new toilets (including a fully accessible one), installation of platform lift, new heating system, storage, etc.

Downstairs is the workshop area, kitchen and small dining area. The kitchen could be used for catering instruction, as well as preparation of teas and coffees, light refreshments. Upstairs has an admin area at the front, which will be used for IT tuition and computer repairs, one-to-one sessions. The main space is for recreational activities, film shows, training presentations, carpet bowls, darts, table games, art activities, music-making and group work.

The activities and services will be phased in gradually to ensure the capacity, skills, resources and personnel to run any activities safely, effectively and efficiently.

sheringham shed logo 640CFPeter said “We believe that Sheringham Shed will provide friendship and support for a wide cross-section of the community. That said, we want to offer tailored courses and activities to help and support those who are lonely or isolated, as well as those who have mental health issues such anxiety or depression, those who feel less confident or have low self-esteem.”

Lighthouse Charity Trust are looking at developing a sister project - Priory Patch in nearby Beeston Regis. This would be a community smallholding, which will increase the range of opportunities that could be offered.
