Norwich church gives 250 hampers to needy families

Proclaimers church has delivered over 500 luxury Christmas hampers to the most vulnerable and forgotten families in both Norwich and Ipswich over the last few days.

The hampers include everything a family would need to have a wonderful Christmas dinner. Each family will receive vouchers for fresh vegetables and meat. Included in each hamper are things like fruit mince pies, chocolates, Christmas cake, custard, gravy mix, turkey stuffing, crisps and Christmas crackers.

The social action arm of the church called “Love Norwich” and “Love Ipswich” were responsible for bringing the project together. Charlotte Rogers, the Director of Love Norwich, said: “The Christmas holidays can be a tough time for some families and Proclaimers wants to lighten the load and give the gift of Christmas to families who may be struggling.”

To help in the distribution of the hampers, a number of local charities have joined with the church to help in identifying such vulnerable families. Thanks go out to over two dozen local charities who have helped to deliver these Christmas hampers.

Notably there have been a number of local businesses who have also help in collecting food for the hampers including the Co-op, Kettles, Sainsbury and Waitrose who generously donated food and cash to help purchase the fresh product. Church members and people in their workplaces across the city have also donated to make this year’s drive so successful.

Fran Marcus, the Director of Love Ipswich, said: “Each year we hear incredible stories from people as the hampers are delivered. We are met at the doors with surprise, excitement and sometimes tears of thanks. It’s a great feeling being behind such acts of generosity. Especially at Christmas time.”

One of the charities the church works with reported that hamper distribution went smoothly last week and they were met with lots of smiles and for some tears of gratitude. One family said: “Oh this has come at just the right time. We are going through a really bad patch. This will be great for Christmas and really help" They have four children in their family. Another family responded: “Thank you! This is so lovely. Are you certain it is really for us?"  There are three children in their family.

Proclaimers is a local church with a campus in Norwich and Ipswich. The two congregations provided the volunteers to pack and wrap this year’s Christmas hampers. Through the generosity of the church and its members they were able to stir others into action to help make Christmas just a little bit better for some families in both Norwich and Ipswich.
