Archbishop praises Diocese of Norwich as visit ends

The third and final day of the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby’s visit to Norfolk began by serving breakfast and ended with a sing-a-long and a ringing endorsement for the Diocese of Norwich.

The day started in Blakeney where the Archbishop met with members of the local community at the Blakeney Breakfast. This church-run community breakfast usually serves around 100 children a free cooked breakfast once a month. Arriving at the breakfast, Archbishop Justin began helping to take orders and cook breakfast for the visitors.

Tricia Temple-Crowe, volunteer at Blakeney breakfast said: “Over the last 18 months, it’s been incredible to see how the Blakeney Breakfast has grown and become a regular fixture in the life of the community. We open the doors at 7.50am, usually on the first Wednesday of the month welcoming many children and families on their way to the primary school next door. “The Archbishop is lovely, and he’s been so impressed with everything we are doing here at Blakeney Church!”

Archbishop Justin said: “This is a beautiful, simple community building in Blakeney. This breakfast began as a one-off fundraiser for Christian Aid but is now a monthly event. All are welcome. Strangers have become friends. Something to consider trying in your own church?”

The Archbishop then went to Walsingham where he took part in an open-air service.

Afterwards, Archbishop Justin travelled to King’s Lynn to the Minster which was packed full of Year 6 children from local schools. The hundreds of children gathered together to raise the roof for a ‘Big Sing for Peace.’

ABCLynnBigSing750the conclusion of his final day, Archbishop Justin said: “It’s been an extraordinary, profound and exhilarating three days in the Diocese of Norwich. I have been so encouraged by all the different ways the churches have been showing the love of Jesus Christ by reaching out and serving their communities.

“On the eve of the Armistice celebrations, it was wonderful to see a passion for reconciliation in all its forms, from sitting down to breakfast with lonely neighbours to gathering all of the children in the area to sing for the peace of the world.

“This Diocese gives me hope for the church and for the world and I leave full of joy. May the love of Jesus Christ continue to uphold and sustain you in all that you do.”
