Sheringham churches to celebrate 1940’s weekend

2018: The 1940’s weekend in Sheringham gets bigger every September, with many of the town’s churches taking part by providing special events.  Tony Rothe reports.

The 1940's - themed weekend will take place on September 15 and 16. The event was originally based around the North Norfolk Railway, but many of Sheringham’s shops and businesses will also reflect a wartime theme, and the town will be packed with visitors and locals wearing 1940’s outfits.

Lighthouse Community Church will be holding a Naafi Café on Saturday September 15 from 10.30am to 4pm. The café will be serving 1940’s-style food, served up by the Lighthouse Land Girls. There will be live music and a Karaoke session, followed by a Tea Dance between 2pm and 4pm. Lighthouse will also be having a 1940’s style service on Sunday morning from 10.15am.

Organiser Sue Savory said “We will be joined by ‘The 40’s Home Front’ who will be leading the dancing, and you will again be able to sample delicious delights of 1940’s cuisine in the café, served by our very own Land Army Girls! There’s plenty of fun for all, and the atmosphere will be great.”

Lighthouse is at 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT.

Sheringham 40s rachel eyre 687Once again St Andrews Methodist Church is planning to combine its Harvest festival Service on Sunday September 16 at 10.30am with the 1940's celebrations. The service this year will be led by the Revd Ann Bossingham, and is entitled ‘Mum’s the Word!’ It will again feature professional 40’s singer Rachel Eyre, right. Visitors and locals are welcome to come along attired, if possible, in clothing which reflects war-time Britain. Following the service, Rachel will sing wartime favourites under a marquee on the front lawn of the church, whilst guests feast on such delights as spam sandwiches and recipes from war-time Britain.

Graham Simms from St Andrews said "We hope to build on the success of last year, when we were joined by passers-by many of whom not only sang along to the music but also got up and danced!
The day forms part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the current church building. Revd Ann Bossingham and her husband Mike (both Methodist Ministers), were married at St Andrews!
