Newton Flotman Community Lunch - Cell Church

Eighteen months ago Andy Cox, a Community Outreach Worker employed one day a week by Cell Church through the Rural Ministries Foundation initiated a Community Lunch in Newton Flotman, which he runs with a team of local volunteers every month.

Norfolk feeds 5000logo243The Community Lunch is hosted on the third Wednesday of every month in the Newton Flotman Church Room.  With a lack of opportunities and facilities to meet up in the village, the monthly lunch fulfils a social need.

Community Outreach Worker Andy Cox said: “There is a good regular bunch of people from the village who just like to get together to have a meal and have a chat with their friends.  There is nowhere else in the village that is a meeting place. There is no village shop; the Village Hall has a playgroup in it every day, so community events in the daytime are very few and far between.”

Andy also arranged for a minibus full of residents at the local care home, Olive House, to be picked up and brought to the lunch through the Norwich Door-to-Door service.   He said: “It gives the people at Olive House a chance to see their village and meet up with some people.”

The project works in partnership with Newton Flotman CE Primary School, where Andy also works.  The school catering staff cooks the meal and package it up in insulated boxes to be picked up by Community Lunch volunteers.  This makes it affordable; with those coming charged £2.80 for the lunch.

“It is a real joint effort,” says Andy.
